Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP): Virtual Options for Flexible Mental Health Care

Sometimes weekly therapy doesn’t feel like quite enough, but that doesn't mean your only option is waiting to get into inpatient care. An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) can help bridge that gap.

An IOP provides structured support that fits around your daily schedule. Great Care Health Services in Nashville, Tennessee, also offers virtual options across Tennessee, making it easier to stay connected to our expert team.

IOP 101

An IOP is a higher level of care than traditional outpatient therapy. It's a good option when you’re managing moderate to severe mental health challenges and need consistent support.

At Great Care Health Services, that means 12 weeks of group therapy sessions lasting 3-4 hours each, a few days each week. We’ve seen the program's intensive nature make a real difference for many of our patients.

It's more than just showing up and talking, though. An IOP uses proven approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), to help you build coping skills and manage your emotions better. Depending on your specific needs, we may recommend individual therapy in addition to group and family sessions.

Who is a candidate for an IOP?

IOPs were originally developed for people struggling with substance use, but today they support a broader range of behavioral health needs. You might be a good fit for the program if you're dealing with:

  • Depression that isn't responding to weekly therapy
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Difficulty managing emotional issues
  • Psychosis

If you're unsure if an IOP is right for you, the team at Great Care Health Services can help you determine whether it may benefit you. Every program starts with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation so we can customize treatment to your specific situation and needs.

The advantages of a virtual IOP

A virtual IOP means you have access to intensive care from your home, your office, or anywhere in Tennessee. It allows you to get critical support without rearranging your entire schedule.

Work obligations, childcare, or transportation challenges are no longer barriers to getting the care you need. Great Care Health Services offers both in-person and telehealth IOP options for adults and adolescents ages 13 and older. We also provide care in English and Spanish.

Understanding the differences between an IOP and inpatient care

Inpatient care requires round-the-clock supervision in a hospital or residential setting. An IOP provides intensive clinical support without requiring you to leave your home environment.

For many of our patients, that flexibility is key. It can serve as an alternative to inpatient care when hospitalization isn't necessary, or as a step-down after a higher level of care.

If you’ve been managing a mental health challenge and feel like the standard therapy isn’t making a big enough impact, an IOP might be your best next step. To learn more or get started, call Great Care Health Services to schedule or request an appointment online today.
